New Year, New You- 5 Hacks to hold you accountable!

Can you believe we are almost half-way done with January?

Two weeks ago you may have written some new year resolutions or goals to achieve - What were they? Did you write them down or just think about writing them down?

Chances are you may be struggling to keep up with these new habits and according to research and Dr. Maxwell Maltz -

"...it takes 21 days to fully form a new habit, as 21 days is the time required for new neuropathways to be fully formed in your brain."

So if you can commit to your goals and be held accountable for at least 21 days you may have just succeeded in keeping true to that New Year goal.

Having trouble staying on track and holding yourself accountable?

We have 5 brilliant hacks for you!

1. Set a deadline like your life depends on it

“A Goal Is A Dream With A Deadline” – Napoleon Hill.

Deadlines force you to look at your priorities to determine what is most important to you and how to make it happen. Bills are due every month and have a deadline for payment. Even if you struggle to keep money in the bank chances are you find a way to pay that deadline.

Now what if you made that goal a life or death situation? Light a fire under you to get it done because the day after doesn't exist.

2. Share your goals and deadlines with others

Do you have a few people in your life who are responsible and want to see you succeed? Reach out to them! Share your goals and deadlines with them and ask them to hold you accountable.

Don't have anyone you can count on? Reach out to us! We will hold you accountable like we do for our students.

You can also:

3. Put your Money where you Mouth is

Now that you've given yourself an impermeable deadline, told people about it, it's time to raise the stakes and put money on yourself.

If one of your goals is to lose weight there are several apps that will either pay you to work out or take your $ for NOT working out.

You could also tell your accountability buddy that if you don't meet your goal or deadline that you owe them X amount of money (I'm sure they wouldn't mind being your accountability buddy if that meant they made money).

4. Find people who share similar goals

You are not alone - there are communities and groups of people out there who share similar goals. The trick is finding them. This could look like:

  • A mastermind group

  • A FB group (search for common interests/goals)

  • Searching for a goal #hashtag and reaching out to people

  • Joining a local club

  • Attend a workshop/class and make friends with people there

Last and most importantly....

5. REWARD YOURSELF

This step is the one of the most important and it's because - you deserve it! If you have successfully held yourself accountable and completed your goal it's time to "treat yo self"!

"By rewarding yourself in the moment, your brain elicits positive emotions, leading to the realization that your efforts result in a positive reward. By doing this continuously, your brain will start to link pleasure to accomplishing the task or objective and move towards it in the future." - Tony Robbins

So in reality every time you accomplish a goal (no matter how small) you should outline what your reward will be upon completion. Your reward does not need to cost anything however if it is a big goal you may want to match it with a big reward.

Some ideas of rewards may be:

  • Go spend some time outside - maybe take a nice stroll or meditate

  • Have that piece of chocolate you've been secretly hiding

  • Allowing yourself to watch that next TV episode

  • Having a movie night at home (maybe even rent something?)

  • Hosting a get together or small party

  • Buying a special makeup product just for you (and not your kit)

  • Buying a fancy coffee

  • Go on a hike (Check out some of these SD Trails)

  • Go on shopping spree at the dollar store

  • Go camping—in your backyard

  • Buy yourself something nice

What goals, deadlines and rewards do you have in place?

We'd love to know so we can help you!
